History

Badenweiler can look back on a long history, in which the culture of bathing has always played a big role.

The history of Badenweiler dates back to Antiquity: vassals of the Roman Emperor Vespasian (69 to 79 AD) discovered the healing springs and called the place where they rose "Aquae Villae”, meaning "Water Town". As early as the Year 75, the civis romani began building Roman baths, the ruins of which can still be seen today beneath the spa park's Cassiopeia Spring. These bear witness to Roman architecture and the tradition of baths and bathing. The remains of the Roman baths in Badenweiler are considered to be the best-preserved in Germany. Badenweiler therefore has an almost 2000 year history as a spa and health resort
